Aquamarine is a semiprecious stone, said to be the stone of the sea by ancient sailors. It gets its name from Latin, “aqua marina” meaning “seawater” . The Romans believed this stone would protect one against dangers at sea, including storms, and sirens. Sailors of the greek era, believed the stone was a treasure from mermaids and thought to bring protection against the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon. Aquamarine is a pale blue variety of beryl, and over time fades to white when exposed to sunlight or subjected to heat treatment. Aquamarine's blue or cyan coloration comes from minute traces of iron.
